Abstract:Based on arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian meshing technique, the numerical models for friction stir welding with traditional unilaterral single shoulder and unilateral double shoulder tools were established. The calculated equivalent strain rate based on logarithmic strain and the maximum temperatures on cross section was available to compute the grain size of the weld in the two kind of shoulders. The proposed model was validated by the comparison with experimental data and experimental rules. In comparison with the traditional tool, the average grain sizes obviously decreases by using the unilateral double shoulder tool under the same condition. The smaller grain sizes can be beneficial to the higher strength of the weld. Therefore,it is beneficial to obtain better weld by using unilateral double shoulder tool. The standard deviation of grains in the stirring zone become smaller by using the unilateral double shoulder tool than that by using the traditional tool under the same condition, which means that the uniformity of mechanical property in weld can be improved by using the unilateral double shoulder tool.
