Design and analysis of taper stress joint for top tensioned risers

Abstract:Stress Joint (SJ) plays a key role in the Top Tensioned Riser (TTR) system for deep water engineering. A preliminary design method of taper SJ is proposed in the paper, which could help designers get accurate design data. And 3-D FE models are established by ABAQUS to evaluate the correctness of design results. Further analysis for the sensitivities of design parameters are carried out particularly in this paper. Then a material selection principle is introduced, and an appropriate SJ design procedure for TTR system is recommended at last, which could help designers have a fully understand of material selection, manufacturing, installation and operational aspects of the riser system.
