Abstract:Since there is no any clause in GB/T 19624—2004 code for assessing the safety of spheroidal tank with misalignment defect, a three-level assessment method based on the Fitness-for-Service (FFS) Standard API 579 was proposed to evaluate a large spherical tank with a misalignment defect which was beyond the tolerance. The work put emphasis on how to execute thefinite element analysis of the Level 3 assessment procedure. A nonsymmetrical 3D model was established in accordance with the practical situation, and based on the FFS standard, safety assessment was successfully performed to the high stress zone. From the study results, an available assessment method for those in-service vessels with misalignment defects was presented finally.
