Abstract: In this paper, a new welding method called the "plasma arc (continues) weld bonding" (PAWB) process was used to join magnesium alloy. The microstructure, elements distribution and failure load of the welding joint were observed and tested. The results showed that a welding joint without pores and inclusions could be obtained by the PAWB process. The fusion zone of the PAWB joint consisted of refined equiaxed grain, and the grain size was finer in upper fusion zone than that in bottom fusion zone. And the heat affect zone was not evident comparing with the plasma arc welding (PAW) joint. The PAWB joint showed the highest failure load among the PAW joint, adhesive bonding joint and itself.
