Abstract:This paper describes the simulation of propagation and deformation of regular and random waves over fringing reefs, using a shock-capturing numerical model based on second-order fully nonlinear Boussinesq equations. A hybrid finite-volume and finite-difference method is used to solve the conservative governing equations, resulting in a shock-capturing Boussinesq model and which is suitable for modelling coastal hydrodynamics under the reef environment. Wave breaking is treated as discontinuities in the model and computed by discarding Boussinesq terms. The numerical results are compared against the experimental data and computed results from others. The variation of wave height, mean water level (MWL) and wave spectrum along reef profiles are reasonably reproduced by the model.
