Abstract:Potential failure analysis is routinely applied to mechanical projects during their design phase. An innovative logic tree, Failure Expansion Tree (FET), is proposed in this paper, which improves the random and subjective nature of traditional Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The new method requires less mathematical calculation and yields a more logical and complete result by constructing a failure tree following the laws of physics. The new methodology is applied to potential early life-cycle failures of a subsea pipeline.
