摘要:Effects of the layer interface condition on fatigue behavior of asphalt pavements with semi-rigid bases were evaluated in this study by means of viscoelastic three-dimensional finite element analyses. The Coulomb friction model was adopted to simulate the behavior of the layer interface. Effects of the position of the frictional interface, temperature, and friction coefficient were investigated. The results show that fatigue cracking is unlikely to occur in AC layers for a properly designed asphalt pavement with semi-rigid bases if all layer interfaces are fully bonded. A frictional interface can result in large horizontal tensile stress at the bottom of the AC layer that forms the interface. Depending on the position of the frictional interface, fatigue cracking may initiate at the bottom of HMA or at the bottom of an intermediate AC layer. With the increase of the Coulomb friction coefficient, the tensile stress at the bottom of the corresponding AC layer can be significantly reduced, especially at high temperatures. ? 2009 ASCE.
