Abstract:The purpose of this article is to examine the prospective issue of maintaining the mental health of the elderly and promote healthy aging in planning agenda, namely how to build the social support system effectively for the elderly by optimizing the environmental elements on the urban residential level. It took perception investigation as the research perspective and two dimensions of quality and scale for the measurement of the social support level. The statistical analysis method was used to identify the complex relationships between the environmental elements related to the perception of social support by the elderly preliminary. It found that, empirically, the level of the elderly' s perception of social support has a positive correlation with many elements of the residential environment,e.g.,the pedestrian facilities, the public security,or the accessibility of shopping space, which are all three related to the quality dimension of social support. However,it does not show a significant correlation with the range dimension. Strategically, useful suggestions are made on how to build the social support system for the elderly effectively, within the aging-friendly residential community. The optimization of the critical environmental elements of the urban residential community should be the core point of concern. The quality elements related to social support should be optimized for improving the elderly' s perception levels of the interpersonal relationship and community identity.
