Abstract:Curves on surfaces play a significant role in CAD/CAM. This paper presents a novel curve fitting method in the case that both the sampled points and the corresponding fitting curve are constrained to lie on a smooth surface. Using the feature sensitive metric on the basis of the intrinsic geometry of surface, we accurately capture the shape of ordered point set. To produce a high-quality curve approximation, adaptive knot placement technique with curvature estimation control is adopted. Numerical experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and quality of the proposed fitting method. ? 2012 Binary Information Press January 2012.
