Abstract: Poly(tetrafluoro ethylene) zirconium phosphate (PTFE/ZrP(2)O(7)center dot xHPO(3)) composite membranes were fabricated to develop a fuel cell membrane for operation at temperatures from 120 to 200 degrees C. A porous PTFE membrane was used as the membrane-supporting structure and ZrP(2)O(7)center dot xHPO(3) sol as the proton conductor. The PTFE/ZrP(2)O(7)center dot xHPO(3) membrane had a high proton conductivity greater than 0.1 S cm(-1) at 0% relative humidity. The mechanical strength of the composite membrane was good, exhibiting a load before a rupture of 10.25 MPa. The PTFE/ZrP(2)O(7)center dot xHPO(3) composite membrane is a promising material for the intermediate temperature proton-conducting membrane fuel cell. (C) 2009 The Electrochemical Society.
