Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyse the influence of thermal modification time on the mechanical properties of poplar after pretreatment with glycerol. In this paper, northeast China poplar was compressed with different thermal modification time (0.5 h, 1 h, 2 h) after pretreatment with glycerol, in order to estimate the mechanical properties and set recovery. The hot press temperature was 150°C, the volume concentration of glycerol was 50% and the compression ratio (CR) was 60%. The set recovery decreases with the increase of the thermal modification time. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of compressed wood increase from the thermal modification time of 0.5 h to 1 h, while they are also close to each other between the thermal modification of 1 h and 2 h. In addition, for specimens with the thermal modification time of 1 h, Brinell hardness (HB) is highest and hardness recovery (HR) is lowest. The thermal modification time has no significant influence on ductility. © WCTE 2018 Committee.
