Abstract: Ship-generated waves can contribute to fatigue in offshore structures. This paper presents a numerical model for evaluating the forces exerted by ship-generated waves on a nearby fixed structure. The ship waves are modeled using Michell thin-ship theory (Wigley waves), and the forces are computed using a boundary element method in the time domain. The simulation was validated by comparing its results to those of frequency-domain methods reported in the literature. It was then applied to calculate the force of ship waves on a truncated cylinder. The ship's speed, dimensions and distance were varied. Our results indicate that the ship waves are rather important and not neglectable. Copyright ? 2009 by The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).
