Abstract:Sn deteriorate the corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel by boosting the pitting propagation. The interaction mechanism between 304 stainless steel with different passive states and low-melting point metal tin was investigated. The effect of Sn on the electrochemical corrosion property of 304 steel was evaluated. The morphologies of Fe-Sn compound formed on 304 steel with the state of no passivation, air passivation for 24 h and HNO3 chemical passivation was analyzed. The interaction extent was characterized by the thickness and the proportion of compound. It is revealed that without passive film, Sn is prone to metallurgically combine with the 304 stainless steel by the formation of interfacial (Fe, Cr)Sn-2 layer. Air-passivation decreases the contact extent between sainless steel and Sn. HNO3 chemical passivation protects steel substrate from (Fe, Cr)Sn-2 compound formation.
