Abstract:This paper presents a damage identification method using additional virtual masses based on Virtual Distortion Method (VDM). The VDM, a fast structural reanalysis method, employs the virtual distortions or virtual forces to simulate structural modification. In this paper, the structure which is changed by adding virtual masses on it is called virtual structure. Firstly, the acceleration frequency response of the virtual structure is constructed by the VDM method. Secondly, the natural frequencies of the virtual structure are estimated by analyzing the frequency response. Lastly, the accurate damage extent of the original structure is estimated with all the data of original and virtual structure. An experiment of a big space truss is used to describe and verify the proposed method. ? 2015, International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure, ISHMII.
