Abstract:Crack propagation and collapse in engineering materials including rock and concrete can cause failure. Rock masses often contain a large number of natural fractures and cracks, which are usually known as candidate locations of rock failure. Knowledge of the rules of crack growth and coalescence is very important for the stability of rock masses or materials and for the safe design of structures in or on rocks. Numerical modeling in this study is accomplished using the finite element program RFPA2D (two-dimensional Rock Failure Process Analysis), which is fully parallelized with OpenMP directives on Windows to utilize the increased computational power of PCs. Modified ring shape specimens with two pre-existing cracks are used to studying the crack growth and the failure process. Effect of the crack orientation angle on the failure modes is discussed and the related rock failure mechanisms are clarified. Compared with the test results, the failure modes show in good conformity.
