Abstract: AZ31B Mg alloy and 6061Al alloys are joined by the laser weld-bonding technique with a galvanized iron interlayer. Diffusion between Mg and Al is nearly prevented by the iron interlayer, which is avoided for the formation of Mg-Al intermetallics. Only traces of Al-Fe intermetallics are found at the bottom of the fusion zone. The property of laser weld bonding of Mg to Al joint was improved by the addition of the galvanized iron interlayer.
