Abstract: Iron-based amorphous alloy/Al micro-laminated composites with multilayer structure were first developed by a facile vacuum hot-pressing method. The results of microstructure and element analysis indicate that, the stacks were metallurgical bond and partially consumed to form intermetallic compounds FeAl3, exhibiting a very high degree of micro-structural design and control. The annealing-induced brittleness of the iron-based amorphous alloy was avoided and the brittle FeAl3 phase can be controlled without stimulating interface splitting. Furthermore, wide hardness gradient (30-1120 HV) and high flexural strength (264 MPa) were achieved. This potentially opens new perspectives for applications of amorphous alloys as large-scale structures. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
