Abstract:In this paper, a series of experiments were performed to investigate the
effects of hydrophobic surface on the heat transfer performance and slug
motion for pulsating heat pipes (PHPs). Experimental results showed that
hydrophobic surface influenced the slug motion and thermal performance
of PHPs. The liquid slug movements became weaker in hydrophobic PHP as
opposed to the copper PHP, while the global heat transfer performance of
the hydrophobic PHP decreased. Dryout phenomena occurred in the PHP with
entirely hydrophobic surface or hydrophobic evaporation surface.
