Abstract:This paper studies the use of pauses by Chinese EFL college students, comparing pause lengths, positions and patterns, in narrative oral English between 10 Chinese and 10 American college students. This study finds that Chinese EFL students cannot make good use of pause strategies and tend to pause more in clauses rather than at clause conjunctures. Moreover, the shorter MLR and more pauses at notional words can account for the dysfluency of Chinese EFL students' oral English.
