A discrete element study on upheaval ratcheting behavior of pipelines buried in sand

摘要:Pipeline ratcheting under the interaction between soil and pipeline is a phenomenon that buried pipelines upheave due to temperature or pressure increases when start-up operation, but fail to return to its original position after unloading, the reason is that soil particles fell back into the gap beneath the pipeline when it upheaves. This paper presents a DEM (Discrete Element Method)  C based micromechanical investigation of ratcheting effect on the behavior of buried pipeline. In this study, numerical simulations of buried pipelines under monotonic uplift loadings are carried out first. The peak resistances agree well with the results in the literature. The ratcheting behaviors of pipelines at various embedment depths are investigated by calculating load-displacement curves of the pipeline under cyclic loadings with amplitude of 50%, 70% and 90% of the peak resistance from the monotonic loading analyses. The effects of cyclic loading amplitude and pipeline embedment ratio on the ratcheting behavior are discussed. ? 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
