Abstract:The joining of aluminum alloy to steel has been investigated by more and more researchers in the world. Because of the existence of brittle and hard intermetallic compounds between Al and Fe, such as FeAl3 and Fe2Al5, the selected process for joining aluminum to steel plays a determining role. The zinc coating on the steel surface is important to enhance the mechanical strength of the weld. Especially, the composition of the filler metal is indispensable for the microstructure and strength of the weld during fusion welding of aluminum to steel. While friction stir lap-welding of aluminum to steel, the penetration of the tool pin below the surface of the steel has remarkable effect on the strength of the weld. If it is butt-welding, the position of the tool pin is the key parameter. Further and deeper research on getting qualified weld between aluminum and steel is still needed.
