摘要:In this study, the plastic strain rate and its effects on the surface nanocrystallization of titanium plate during alternative shot peening processes are investigated. Finite element modeling is performed to provide quantitative description of the plastic strain rate distribution from the top surface to the interior of the material during certain surface nanocrystallization process. Compared study are also made in different experimental parameters. Results show that the plastic strain rate is an important factor that can affect the surface nanocrystallization process. The average plastic strain rate at the top surface layer in a typical high energy shot peening test is up to 10(4) s(-1), which leads to super-plastic deformation in the surface of the target plate. High energy shot peening experiments are carried out on commercially pure titanium plates. The surface microstructures are characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Combining experimental observations and finite element modeling results, the effects of plastic strain rate on the strain accommodation mechanism and plastic deformation mode are discussed.
