Abstract: The transmission and distribution of vibration energy flow in coupled plates are studied by visualization techniques. Formulations for vibration intensity calculations and streamline representation, and the equations for energy flow are presented. The intensity vector, streamline map and energy distribution of an L-shaped plate subject to a point force excitation are calculated and visualized to predict vibration energy transmission and the sinking position where the energy is dissipated. The energy flow patterns and distributions at different excitation frequencies are discussed. The application of energy visualization technique improves the quality of structure-borne noise diagnostics and provides a more accurate scientific basis for the implementation of active / passive vibration control in a marine structure. ? 2010 by The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).
