Abstract:A composite surface treatment scheme was developed, which combines arc deposition with high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB) post treatment. This technique has been applied to the rapid surface alloying by Al of steel. Al coatings were deposited on the steel samples by arc ion plating. The coatings were further bombarded with HCPEB. Due to the rapid surface heating and melting, the Al coatings were melted into the substrate surfaces, leading to a rapid surface alloying effect. Oxidation measurements on the HCPEB-treated samples reveal the improved oxidation resistance at high temperature as compared with the reference samples.
