Abstract:The CsCl superstructures are one group of approximants. However, their structural relationship to quasicrystals is still obscure. Apparently they to not contain similar structural subunits to those of the corresponding quasicrystals. The present paper attempts to clarify this point by discussing the structures of Al3Ni2, delta-Al4Cu9 and one newly discovered Al-Cu phase. The role of vacancies will be discussed. A unified classification scheme for all approximants will also be proposed.
