Abstract:The pH value of saline water decreases significantly with carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolution. The light absorbed by saline water containing an acid-base color indicator changes as a function of the dissolved CO2 concentration. For a bulk solution in a container with a certain thickness, light attenuation is proportional to solute concentration. Therefore, light attenuation can be used to quantify the dissolved CO2 concentration in water. We developed a spectrophotometric method for measuring the concentration of dissolved CO2 using an acid-base color indicator. An image processing charge-coupled device (CCD) camera was used to take images during the CO2 dissolution process. The gray value variation of the CCD camera images was combined with spectrophotometric analysis to determine the dissolved CO2 concentration.
