Abstract:A new process using ultrasonic treatment for the production of clad ingots of 3003 and 4004 aluminium alloy was investigated. The interface region of the clad ingots was investigated by metallographic examination and energy dispersive microanalysis. The experimental results show that when the inner layer of the 4004 alloy melt was treated ultrasonically, the solidification structure changed from dendritic to globular grains, and the average grain size was reduced to 67.5 mu m. In addition, the morphology of eutectic silicon near the interface of 3003 and 4004 alloys was modified from a coarse acicular plate-like morphology to a finely short stick form when ultrasonic treatment was used.
