Abstract: In this paper, a laser-triggered vacuum switch (LTVS) had designed in order to meet the requirements of quick-make and precise control in pulse power systems. The operating characteristics of LTVS had been investigated. Experimental results show that thermal effect and collision ionization effect are the main reasons for the switch conduction, and its time delay less than 1us, jitter time 50 ns. In turn-on process, the arc development had past three stages: rapid growth, stable and quickly reduce. What's more, the consumption of trigger materials is mainly due to laser ablation.
