Abstract:In this paper, the reaction mechanism between mo lten aluminum and solid silica is presented. It may be described by SiO2 in- situ reaction model. The reaction contains the incubation period, the reaction period and the period after reaction. During the reaction, Si is transported in to the Al bath, while Al is continuously supplied to the reaction front with sil ica. Atoms migrate through the transport channels (space cavity, crack and gra in boundary) mainly. X-ray diffraction analysis and EDAX analysis of composite s were made. The dimension, electrical conductivity and surface finish of produ cts were measured. A solid silica body can be transformed into Al/Al2O3 com posite while maintaining its macroscopic shape and geometrical features.
