Abstract:Nanocrystallinemagnesiumoxide with different lithiumdopingmolar contents were prepared by amicrowaveassisted hydrothermal route to improve their antibacterial activity. The as-preparedMgO and Li-dopedMgO possess the co-existing structure of nanometer flakes and nanometer particles with the diameter ranged from 50 to 150 nm. The antibacterial effect of Li-dopedMgO against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was tested by the minimum inhibitory concentration test and colony counting method. It was found that the doping of Li significantly improved the antibacterial activity ofMgO. Among the different lithiumdoping molar contents ofMgO, the bactericidal rate of the 3mol% Li-dopedMgO could reach to 99.9% at the concentration of 600 mu g/mL, showing the best antibacterial efficiency. The antibacterialmechanismwas also investigated. Thiswork establishes guidelines on structural regulation and improvement of MgO antibacterial properties. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
