Abstract: New highly conjugated bispyryliums were synthesized by the Knoevenagel reaction between a-CH3 pyrylium and aromatic dicarboxaldehydes. Their photophysical properties were fully investigated. The results showed that they exhibited a tunable fluorescence emission colors ranging from green to red in solution by changing the properties of connecting p bridges. The experimental results were also supported by theoretical calculations. In addition, their fluorescence emission in solid state was also investigated preliminarily. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
