Optimal Operation of Cascade Hydropower Plants in Deregulated Electricity Market: A Case Study of Lancang River in China

Abstract:With the development of China's newly power market reform, the operation mode of cascade hydropower plants has fundamentally changed a lot. The uncertainties of competitors' bidding behaviors and market demand affect the operation of cascade hydropower plants, and thus make the optimal problem more complicated. In this paper, a new model for optimal operation of cascade hydropower plants in deregulated electricity market is proposed. The model applies the maximum generation profit as object function, and also takes other bidder's competitive behaviors, electricity load demand and market price into consideration. The proposed model is applied to the operations of cascaded hydropower plants on Lancang River, and the effects of competitors' different bidding behaviors on optimization results are also discussed. Compared with the traditional generation maximization models, the proposed model can enhance the total generation profit under the given market trading rules.
