Abstract:Optimization methods are widely adopted to derive operating rule curves in hydropower systems. However, the gap may still exist between theories and application due to complex constraints in the real world. To decrease this gap, this paper presents a method to derive operating rule through which practical constraints in a single reservoir operation are satisfied. This method originally involves solving two recursive equations in both dry and wet period, respectively, to derive the initial practical trajectory that meet the minimum amount of release requirement without spillage. Then a simulation model is developed to evaluate the performance of the practical trajectory, which is optimized by raising the initial trajectory progressively and finally determined by the trajectory that maximize the annual power generation. The simulation results for a multi-year reservoir in southern China are compared with those obtained with the conventional rule curves and stochastic dynamic programming.
