Abstract:Based on a series of static and cyclic triaxial tests on both clean sand and clay-sand mixtures of different bentonite content, the effect of bentonite content on the liquefaction potential in saturated sand was investigated. The liquefaction potential does not change monotonously with the bentonite content increasing, while a certain threshold value exists, between 5% and 10%. The liquefaction potential of saturated sand rises with the initial addition of clay and then drops with a further increase of clay content. The reason for this behavior is due to the different grain structure at different bentonite content. When the bentonite content is smaller than 5%, the clay particles lubricate the sand particles, creating an unstable structure. As the bentonite content increases to more than 10%, the clay matrix spreads around the sands and fills the pores, mounting the sands and forming a relatively stable structure. ? 2013, EJGE.
