Experimental investigation on multidirectional loading under different initial stress states in clay

摘要:In order to simulate dynamic behavior of saturated clay, considering the combined effects of coupling loading and initial consolidation condition, multidirectional cyclic tests were conducted for anisotropic consolidation under different orientations of initial principal stress (alpha(0)). The apparatus for static and dynamic universal tri-axial and torsional shear soil testing was employed to perform stress-controlled cyclic coupled vertical and torsional shear tests for various values of alpha(0) with 90 degrees of phase delay. The effect of alpha(0) on dynamic strength behavior as well as pore water pressure evolution under cyclic coupling shear tests was systematically investigated through a number of soil tests. In order to reflect the variation of pore pressure with different stress states, the method of acquiring pore water pressure which was getting stable after ceasing coupling cyclic loading was adopted. Moreover, it was shown that a general strain failure criterion for clay was recommended for considering the integrative effects of torsional shear strain and normal deviatoric as well as cyclic strain and cumulative strains.
