Abstract:A new column of BFRP-steel composite tube confined concrete (BSCTCC) column was proposed. BFRP-steel composite tube was composed of steel tube and BFRP layer which was wrapped outside the steel tube. In the BSCTCC column, the composite tube was broken at both ends of the column. Therefore, no axial load was applied directly on the composite tube and its only role was to confine the concrete core. This paper presents experimental studies on the behaviour of circular BSCTCC stub columns subjected to axial compressive load. Two circular BSCTCC stub columns and one circular steel tube confined concrete (STCC) stub column were tested to investigate the failure mode and axial compression performance of circular BSCTCC columns. The effect of BFRP layer wrapping outside the steel tube was studied. The test results indicated that circular BSCTCC stub columns exhibited much higher axial load capacity than circular STCC stub columns. Furthermore, with the increase in the layers of FRP wraps, the axial load capacity increases greatly.
