Abstract:A novel CFRP-steel composite plate (CSP) is proposed, where a steel plate is sandwiched between two outer CFRP laminates. Four groups of CSP specimens with four different CFRP layers and one control group of steel plate specimens were tested under uniaxial tension. A uniaxial monotonic tensile test and a uniaxial cyclic tensile test were conducted to determine the initial elastic modulus, postyield stiffness, yield strength, ultimate bearing capacity and residual deformation of the CSP specimens. The stress-strain curves of the CSP specimens from the tests results presented bilinear prior to the fracture of the outer CFRP, and the CSP specimen had stable postyield stiffness and smaller residual deformation than that of the SP specimens after yielding. The postyield modulus of the CSP specimens increased with the increasing number of outer CFRP layers, as well as the ultimate bearing capacity. © 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
