Abstract:Pulsing Denial of Service (PDoS) is a newly proposed DoS attack. During a PDoS attack, malicious traffic is sent in a disguised way in which traffic burst and traffic silence appear alternately. In this paper, the detectability and restraint of PDoS traffic are studied based on ratio of the number of outbound packets to that of inbound packets from the same IP addresses. In the simulations, constant rate DoS traffic are compared with PDoS traffic, and the results show (i) constant rate DoS traffic can be effectively detected and controlled, (ii) effective detection and control of the PDoS traffic depend on the bursting time and the period of the attacks.
