Abstract:The influence of sea ice size on compressive strength was studied by uniaxial compressive experiment in this paper to investigate the local ice load of wide structures in cold regions, which is unclear at present. Comparison of the present local ice load computing methods exhibits that there are great differences among them. Based on the discrete element method (DEM), a number of structures with different sizes are simulated under various ice conditions. The results show that the distribution of local ice pressures along the direction of ice thickness is larger at the center and smaller at the ends, and random along the direction of structural width. The local ice pressure decreases with the increase of contact area, and there is an exponential relationship between them. Finally, a novel approach to calculate local ice pressures for wide structures is proposed in this paper, whose rationality is verified by field measurement data. © 2021, Editorial Board of Journal of Ship Mechanics.
