DEM simulation of ellipsoid particulate assembly subjected to biaxial compression

摘要:Quasi-static shear deformation of two-dimensional ellipsoid granular array is simulated using discrete element method (DEM). The contributions of the tangential force to the total shear stress are considered under different friction coefficients. The evolution of microscopic fabric is presented and the effects of particle shape, interparticle friction coefficient and consolidation stress of the assembly on the critical valence (number of edges per void cell) are investigated. The numerical results show that the mechanical properties of granular materials are affected significantly by the particle shape, surface characteristic of the individual particle and consolidation stress of the assembly. The non-uniform manner of contact force is reproduced by numerical simulation and the relatively rigid, heavily stressed chains of particles form a sparse network. The existence of circulation cells shows that the particles are in interaction with neighboring particles.
