Abstract:The superplastic joining experiments of the x wt.% TiO2-doped ZTA (zirconia toughened alumina) composite ceramics (x = 0, 1, 4 and 8) were conducted at 1300 degrees C in this study. The interfacial microstructures showed that, with the increase of the TiO2 amount, the macro/micro-sized cavities, cracks, and the welding line at the joined interface were reduced gradually and finally eliminated. Moreover, the shear strength and joint efficiency of the ZTA joints were enhanced from 21.2 MPa/8.8% to 74.5 MPa/29.9%, 145.6 MPa/64.2% and 187.6 MPa/92.0% by doping 1 wt%, 4 wt% and 8 wt% TiO2 dopant, respectively. Based on the interfacial microstructure and fracture micmtopography of the TiO2-doped ZTA joints, the results were discussed in terms of the relationship between fracture mode and TiO2 amount.
