Dr Haiyang Li is an associate professor in School of Automotive Engineering at Dalian University of Technology, China, since July 2020. He received the B.E. degree in mechanical engineering from Liaoning University of Petroleum and Chemical Technology in 2005, the M.E. degree in mechanical design and theory from Northeastern University, China, in 2008, and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from University College Cork, Ireland, in 2017. He was an engineer in mechanical design at the Engineering Department and the R&D Centre of CISDI Ltd. from April 2008 to December 2012. He also worked as a researcher in the Bio-Photonics Group at Tyndall National Institute, Ireland, from February 2017 to September 2018, working on the design of advanced medical devices, and then he was appointed as associate professor in mechanical engineering in Northeastern University, China, until June 2020. His research interests mainly focus on the creative design and application of compliant mechanisms and robots. He has proposed approaches to the synthesis, modelling and optimization of compliant mechanisms, which have been published in more than 40 peer-reviewed papers. Moreover, he has successfully applied for 16 patents, and two of the patents have been employed in several industrial projects. He enrolled in several major projects funded by the CISDI, the Irish Research Centre, the Science Foundation Ireland, the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He is serving as an associate editor for the journal of IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L), a topical editor of the journal Mechanical Sciences (MS), a guest editor of a special issue entitled "Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing" as part of the journal MS, a youth editorial board member of International Journal of Hydro-mechatronics (IJHM), an invited presentation at the 3rd Sino-German Workshop on “Material-Oriented Micro/Nano Manufacturing: Modeling, Experiment and Application”, a technical program committee member of the 2020 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Signal Processing (AISP2020), a co-chair of ASME Student mechanism and robot design competition (SMRDC) from 2021 to 2023, and a co-organizer of the compliant mechanism workshop in the 2021 IEEE and ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM 2021). He has been the regular reviewers in several top journals such as MS, MMT, JMD, JMR, SoRo, IJMS, TMECH, IEEE T IND INFORM, Shock and Vibration. He has earned several awards, including the ASME Compliant Mechanism Award in 2022, the supervisor of the team who awarded the 1st place in 2022 ASME SMRDC, the CISDI Outstanding Young Employee Title in 2009, the CISDI S&T Progress Award in 2012, the CISDI Patent Silver Award in 2012, the IRC-SET Scholarship from 2013 to 2016 and the NEU-MEA Personal Contribution Award in 2019.
