Abstract:Ship general arrangement design is complex three-dimensional layout problem, due to that it needs coordinating contradictions between various specialties and the result generation also need massive calculation on performances, so that it is difficult to modify the layout design in the iteration process. One key to efficient ship general arrangement design is lowering the time on transmission between design intention or concept, sketch design, and the real design, which indicate a need for good understanding on the design rationale including constraints, rules, design methods, and so on. This paper presents a new method of ship general arrangement design based on ontology. In the framework, an general arrangement design (GAD) ontology serves as a formal, explicit specification of general arrangement design so that it makes design knowledge both machine-interpretable and to be shared. This paper shows that the ability of GAD ontology can capture design intentions by a demonstration with a realistic fishery administration vessel design. Finally, this paper presents an ontology-based ship general arrangement design framework and a layout design semantic browser. ? 2013: The Royal Institution of Naval Architects.
