Dr. Rui Xu is currently an associate professor at DUT-RU International School of Information Science and Engineering, Dalian University of Technology. He is also an affiliated associate professor at Ritsumeikan Univerisity, Japan.

Dr. Rui Xu received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in 2001 and 2004, respectively, from the School of Electronic and Information, South China University of Technology, China. He received the Ph.D. degree in 2007 from the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University, Japan. He worked in Digital Technology Research Center, Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., Japan, from 2008 to 2010. He worked as a research fellow in Yamaguchi University and Ritsumeikan University, from 2010 to 2015. He has been an associated professor at the DUT-RU International School of Information Science & Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, China, since 2015.

His research fields are medical image processing and analysis, computer-aided diagnosis and machine learning. In recent years, he has researched on accurate and efficient analysis of medical images to provide assisted information for disease diagnosis, such as computer-aided diagnosis system on diffuse lung diseases and COVID-19, and accurate segmentation of retinal vessels via deep neural networks. He is a reviewer for several distinguished journals and international conferences, such as IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics (IEEE-JBHI)  and MICCAI. He had received excellent research paper awards in the Japanese society of radiological technology and the visualization society of Japan.
