Abstract:This paper presents a preliminary investigation to the permeability of a typical marine sand, i.e., carbonate sand. The carbonate sand is widespread in tropical sea all around the world. With the help of the conventional permeability test apparatus, the relationships between flow velocity and hydraulic gradient was obtained for the carbonate sand. To examine the effect of particle size distribution on the permeability, carbonate sand specimens with varied uniformity coefficients and curvature coefficients have been used in the tests. The observation of a significant dependency of permeability on the particle size distribution can be obtained. Also, an investigation to the effect of the particle shape on the permeability was carried out by comparing with glass spheres. The result indicates that the carbonate sand shows an apparent deviation in the permeability from the glass beads specimen composed of regular particles. In addition, a useful numerical approach is introduced to study the permeability of columns of porous material using DEM coupled with CFD.
