Abstract:A method of theory prediction with experiment investigation is used in this paper to study the strength and stiffness of stitched composite structures, and the effects of stitching style on mechanical properties. An analysis model of mechanical properties of stitching composite structures is established on the base of homogenization method. The agreement of theoretic prediction and experiment measurement indicates that the model is correct and available. It is shown from the result analyses of in-plane tension, compression and shear stiffness and strength of stitched composite structures made of different manufacturing process (stitched/RFI, unstitched/RFI and prepreg autoclave) that: (1) In-plane stiffness drop dose not grow with the induce of thread which affects in-plane strength greatly. (2) The selection of stitching thread and control of the whole stitching process will affect directly the micro-structural status of compound of fiber or thread with matrix, which will put a great influence on the stiffness and strength of stitched laminates.
