Abstract:Many major Chinese shipbuilding companies still use traditional one-factor analysis of variance to manage the process and cost of building ships and oceanic projects, limiting management's ability to supervise. In order to more effectively monitor the process of building ships and ocean projects, the earned value theory can be introduced as a significant methodology in the field of modern project management. Based on modifications to the classical theory, this paper discusses advanced performance evaluation systems and methods for managing shipbuilding, then reviews a feasibility study carried out using as an example-a double-bottom-block building process. This research showed that earned value management is an effective project management tool. The method provided early indications of weakness in project performance and alerted management to needed corrective action.
