Abstract:Influence of high current pulsed electron beam treatment (HCPEB) on surface morphology and roughness of TC4 titanium alloy was investigated. The results demonstrate that the surface roughness of the alloy after HCPEB treatment depends on the surface condition of as-received sample. When surface roughness of the original sample is greater than 0. 031 p,m, surface melting is dominant, so the surface roughness is reduced after HCPEB treatment. When surface roughness of the original sample is 0.031 ~m, crater formation is dominated, so the surface roughness increases after HCPEB treatment. In conclusion, HCPEB treatment can increase or reduce surface roughness depending on surface melting or crater formation. During the HCPEB treatment process, crack carl easily initiate in high surface roughness sample, which is due to the thermal-mechanical coupled process of HCPEB treatment.
