Abstract: Dielectric-response formalism is used to obtain the dynamical interaction potential among the ions in a fast molecule as a sum of a radially symmetric screened Coulomb potential and an asymmetric wake potential. The influence of the wake-potential asymmetry on the electrons bound at each constituent ion in the molecule is described within the Brandt-Kitagawa theoretical framework, and it is found that the charge state of the leading ion may be significantly different from that of the trailing ion. The effects of such ion-charge asymmetry on the Coulomb explosions dynamics of the molecular ion are studied by solving the equations of motion for the constituent ions. ? 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
