Abstract:An initial assessment of the feasibility of good dispersions of micropores on the surface of AISI 304 austenitic steel by HCPEB (high-current pulsed electron beams irradiation) treatment was reported. The experiments were conducted on a HCPEB equipment of Nadezhda-2 type. It produced an electron beam of low electron energy 10-40kV, high peak current 102-103A/cm2, short pulsed duration 0.5-5 ps and irradiated area 30cm2. AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel was selected as the target material. The polished surfaces of samples were irradiated at room temperature with 1 and 10 pulses using HCPEB source, respectively. Microstructural examinations were performed with a optical microscope and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) of type H-800. Besides the vacancy dislocation loops, both stacking fault tetrahedra (SFTs) and voids were observed in the sample with 10 pulses irradiation. The microstructure on the irradiated surface can be observed directly and the chemical etching process is not needed.
